Contest Details Finalized for Custom Rod Giveaway

Over the years the Overmountain Chapter has offered a number of truly fine quality fly rods as a part of Chapter fund raising efforts.  During 2001 the Chapter has finalized plans to offer a rod which will be as fine a rod as ever away in a Chapter fund raising effort.
Our master rod maker Mike Adams has agreed to complete a 2 piece, 9 foot, 5 weight, fast tip action rod using the same blank used to manufacture the Orvis Trident line of fly rods.  This magnificent rod will be outfitted with titanium line guides, a fiddle back maple reel seat with nickel hardware and a Flora cork handle.
The rod will be a delight not only to hold and look at but also to cast. It will be offered based on a drawing.  One hundred entries will be allowed.
Each entry costs $10 and provides three chances at the drawing. The drawing will occur when all entries have been sold.
You do not need to be present at the drawing to win.  You can enter as many times as you like.
Sales of entries will begin at the next Chapter meeting on February 8. Entries can also be purchased by filling out the 3 chances shown below and sending them with a check for $10 to:

   Charles R. Martin
   512 Fleetwood Court  Unit F
   Kingsport, TN  37660

Don't miss this opportunity to own a rod you'll treasure for a lifetime.
Remember the drawing is limited to 100 entries so make sure your name is in the pot.

Wetlands expert Shares With Overmountain Chapter

Our thanks to ETSU Professor Dr. Paul Wetzel who spoke at the Overmountain Chapter meeting in January.
Wetzel's topic was"Restoration of the Florida Everglades: Economics and ecology in the cauldron of politics." He is currently working on restoration of a large wetland in Shady Valley, once a cranberry bog, until it was drained in the 1940s and used for pasture.
Wetzel, whose background is in wetland ecology and restoration,  has worked extensively in the Florida Everglades studying and restoring tree islands in wetlands. He also edited a book on the subject.
Thanks, Professor, and come back soon!

Did you know…
Trout cannot see you well if you position yourself with your back to the sun?

A trout will not generally move very far to take a nymph, so it often pays to try a lot of different casts to a particularly good holding area?

Fishing Tip of the Month  From Lefty Kreh

To improve vision whenever it is necessary to see fish or structure try the following tip. Wear a hat with a wide brim and darken the underside of the brim with black liquid shoe polish. The dark brim reduces glare reflected off the water

Carter County Clean Streams Under new management in '01

Because of a recent decision by the Chamber of Commerce, the Carter County Clean Streams/Watauga River clean-up for 2001 will be managed by a committee which include folks from the Overmountain Chapter as well as other interested groups.
Chamber Board Member Joe La Porte will chair the committee and manage the operations on the committee's behalf.
Our thanks to Joe and the Chamber of Commerce for their active participation in this important project.
Now let's all get behind this to make it a great success in 2001.

Chapter misses meeting But does have its input

Inclement weather prevented Overmountain Chapter representatives from the attending the Coldwater Resources Council's semi-annual meeting in January, but not from having its primary concerns aired.
Resources Management Committee Chair Bill Beazell wrote Dr. Wayne L. Poppe explaining the absence and pointing out that our main concern was a proposal on water releases from the South Holston Dam we submitted on August 7.
