MINNESOTA BOUNDRY WATERS

At the April Chapter meeting, Tim Landis of Mountain Sports spoke glowingly of his love for the wilderness. The eagles, bears, moose, deer and otters complement the marvelous trout, smallmouth bass and walleye fishing from canoes.

WATAUGA CLEANUP

The Watauga River Cleanup Committee met at North American Rayon Corp at 1 pm on April 9.  Present were Joe LaPorte, Lynn Smith, Marjorie Stratton, John McKee and Bill Beazell.    Everything appears on schedule.

SOUTH HOLSTON CLEANUP

The S.H. Lake and River Cleanup Committee met at the Jacobs Creek Job Corps on April 9.  The committee has obtained eight of the ten needed sponsors.  The Eastman Credit Union through Bob Viers made a $300 contribution.  We were invited to the Job Corps recognition dinner.

GREATER KINGSPORT CLEANUP

On Saturday morning, April 20, Jim Davis, Charles Martin, Charles Gibson, Danny and Katherine Sells, Jerry Headrick, Junior Landers, Bob Reynolds and Bill Beazell supported the Great Kingsport Cleanup.  Twenty bags (50 gallons each) of trash, a tire, some cast iron pipe, and other items were removed from the banks of the Patrick Henry tail water.  More cleaning remains to be done on the river.

KENDRICK’S CREEK POLUTION

John Krutak and Bill Beazell have met with Danny Shupe and his wife reguarding the pollution (both water and air) of Kendericks Creek.  We watched a video of their experience with the City of Kingsport reguarding the problem.  Some corrections have been made, and we plan to meet with City engineers to obtain more information.

STOCKING KAMLOOP FINGERLINGS

On April 4, Jim Davis, Gary Scheves and Bill Beazell investigated entry to Cherry Flats on Laurel Fork, and then proceeded to Doeville and Pandora to check the Laurel Spring Pump Station, and finally to help Bart Carter and Carl Williams of TWRA stock 5,000 Kamloop trout fingerlings in lower Doe Creek.

The pump station has a large filter bed and the pump house is a large brick structure.  Water at 1 pm was flowing into the stream (as required by contract between 7am and 7 pm).

3. A MOTION WAS PASSED FOR THE CHAPTER TO PARTICIPATE IN THE PATRICK HENRY LAKE CLEANUP SCHEDULED FOR APRIL 20. TU WILL CLEAN UP APPROX. ¾ MILE TAILWATER SECTION IMMEDIATELY BELOW THE HAMMOND BRIDGE. SOUTH HOLSTON TAILWATER CLEANUP

Tom Swadley, Chairman of the lake and river cleanup committee, Rob Nicar, Bluff City area resident and committee member, and Bill Beazell attended the April 18 meeting of the Bluff City Board of Mayor and Aldermen.  All three of us asked for the support of Bluff City in strengthening local participation in the annual cleanup.  The appeal was well received and we look for both attendance and financial support.

MONTANA   By Bob Hartwell of Uncle Bobs Fly Shop

A man was visiting churches around the country.  He went to a very large church in California and saw a golden telephone on the wall with a sign saying,”$10,000 a minute.”

In response to his inquiry the pastor explained that the golden phone is, in fact, a direct line to Heaven and if he pays the price he can talk directly to God.

As he continues to visit churches around the United States he finds the same answer from each pastor.

Finally, he arrives in Montana.  Upon entering a church in Dillon, he sees the usual golden telephone.  But THIS time, the sign reads, “Calls: 25 cents.” Fascinated, he requests to talk with the pastor.  “ Reverend, I have been in cities all across the country and in each church I have found this golden telephone and have been told it is a direct line to Heaven and that I could talk to God, but in the other churches the cost was $10,000 a minute.  Your sign reads 25 cents a call. Why”

The pastor, smiling benignly, replies, “Son, you’re in Montana now and it’s a local call.”
