September Meeting featured Dr. Phil Bettoli, Tennessee Technological University. His presentation was on  a fisheries report titled  "Reproductive Potential of Brown Trout in Tennessee Tailwaters".  The study was conducted on the Clinch, South Fork of the Holston, Watauga and Hiwassee Rivers.  One of the conclusions in the report was that trout reproduction in Tennessee tailwaters is the exception rather than the rule.  Factors such as poor fitness, lack of suitable spawning substrate, magnitude of discharges, frequencies of high discharges were identified as variables that impeded the reproductive process.  The report states that the level of natural reproduction in the South Fork of the Holston River is currently thought to be higher than any other tailwater in Tennessee.  For more information, please contact Dr. Bettoli at email address:  pbettoli@tntech.edu.  Our special thanks to Dr. Bettoli and his staff for such an informative meeting.

Todd Burleson Memorial Cleanup.   On Saturday, September 16, 45 conservation minded persons gathered in Roan Mountain to pickup trash and litter from Heaton, Hampton, Cove and Shell Creek as well as Doe River.  Representatives from the Southern Appalachian Highlands Conservancy, U.S. Forest Service, TWRA, Overmountain Chapter members, Cloudland High School Ecology Club and citizens of Roan Mountain removed over four pickup truck loads of litter.  Seventeen of those in attendance were TU members and agency representatives.  The balance was from the local community as  a result of  Bob Burleson’s efforts to mobilize the community. TVA provided the bags and gloves.   The trash was deposited with the Roan Mountain State Park.   Bob Burleson, Todd’s father, prepared and served hot dogs with all of the fixings for lunch.  Todd was the founder of the cleanup in early ‘90’s and has been sorely missed since his untimely death in December 1997.
