Last Cleanup of 1999
In the summer heat Overmountain Chapter members and Roan Mountain citizens
worked hard on the last cleanup of 1999. Their efforts removed three
pickup loads of trash from the Doe River and its tributaries. After
the grunting and groaning ended the volunteers enjoyed a picnic lunch of
hot dogs and watermelon.
During the social hour following the cleanup Ken Chase and Bob Burleson
got their heads together and plotted the inclusion of a Roan Mountain Citizens
group in future cleanups.
It should be noted that Jere Houser and his son, Lance, fished in the
park that afternoon. Jere was rewarded with an 18" rainbow (his measurement).
Who says good deeds go un-rewarded?
Upcoming Chapter activities for September include workdays on the 20th
at Hampton Creek to assist TWRA with Brook Trout stocking and on the 25th
at Limestone Cove for the completion of handicapped access trails.
Your participation would qualify as a "good deed". Remember Jere's fish.
Our August meeting was highlighted by Dr. Phil Bettolli's presentation
of his research findings on South Holston Tailwater. His work has
shown that Holston is the premier tailwater in Tennessee and motivated
TWRA to consider a new management approach for this stream.
This month's meeting at the House of Ribs will feature Bruce Wankel,
owner of the Virginia Creeper Fly Shop in Abingdon, on the subject of saltwater
Fly fishing. Charles Martin will demonstrate the Blue Quill Parachute,
an essential in any fall fly-box.
The September meeting will bring to a close Ken Chase's tenure as Chapter
President. Under his leadership The Overmountain Chapter has received national
recognition for its accomplishments. I hope you will join us in biding
him a rousing farewell and greet the incoming Officers and Board members.
